The South of the Canton

The City of Mostar is the centre of Herzegovina in every respect. By its geographical features it belongs to the micro-region of southern Herzegovina.

In addition to Mostar, this micro-region is made up of the municipalities of Čitluk, Čapljina, Stolac, Ravno and Neum. Southern Herzegovina is the Mediterranean micro-region in the true sense of the word. The vicinity of the Adriatic Sea, altitude and relief determine its climate and vegetation. This karst area is characterized by warm summers and mild winters with two winds: northern (called ‘bura’) and the south that comes from the sea (called ‘jugo’). The territory of southern Herzegovina is covered by autochthonous and Mediterranean plants, which, combined with grey limestone, create romantic and unforgettable images. In addition to medicinal herbs, plants such as olives, mandarins, oranges, figs, grapevines, pomegranates, etc. are also cultivated here. The entire area is also adorned by the high vegetation of oak, ash and hornbeam. In this rural area, tourists are able to have a series of activities such as bird watching, camping, kayaking, fishing, hunting, photography, scuba diving, visits to parks, farms, orchards, etc. From the north to the Adriatic Sea, the Neretva River makes this region the most fertile in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Peppers, tomatoes, spinach, borecole, Swiss chard, lettuce, onion, watermelon, etc., which place the Herzegovinian cuisine among other healthy Mediterranean cuisines, are produced here. The territory of southern Herzegovina provides opportunities to offer original products of meat and milk; gastronomic specialties, top quality wines, rare species of fruits, which because of their specificity, manner of breeding and processing, give the right to call them “original Herzegovinian products”.
