What is Agroturism

There are several definitions, which are common among experts of rural tourism. Rural tourism is a broad term that signifies any tourist activity within rural areas, that is, it encompasses various kinds of tourism (hunting and fishing tourism in parks of nature; winter tourism, country tourism, ecotourism, health tourism and cultural tourism). Rural tourism does not have to make additional profit but can be also professional activity Agroturism – a narrower term than rural tourism and at the same time broader term than tourism on the agricultural household (country estate); it is related to village ambiance and its close vicinity as well as to all its activities (agriculture, events, gastronomy, folklore, ethnology, crafts and other economic activities).

Tourism on the agricultural household (country estate) is exclusively related to agricultural activities within the household and offers products produced exclusively on the estate. Tourist services are oriented to offering accommodation and food providing, but also additional activities such as participating in agricultural works, old crafts workshops, and possibility to take part in preparation of traditional meals. Tourism is exclusively an additional activity. Very often this category is called agricultural tourism. However, regardless of definitions, what is important is that which makes country tourism, agrituorism and rural tourism specific and more original than other forms of tourism. First there is a host- guest kind of interaction.

The guest is no longer merely a statistic number or, worse, a “room key”, but becomes instead part of the family here. Tourist services are personalized; guests are being treated as friends. In agritourism, an entire space of the household is at guest’s disposal to share only with a host. There is also a contact with local people, customs, culture, and way of life, local gastronomy, activities in the surroundings (outdoor and special programs) which enable original and fulfilling experience. Accommodation is usually organized in traditional ambient houses.
